Tea: Which to Drink When

Tea is the most widely consumed drink in the world (outside of water, of course), and in the minds of many, there's never a bad time to enjoy this beloved beverage. With so many amazing varieties of tea to choose from, how do you determine which ones to drink, and when? Below are some tried-and-true recommendations to help you keep your tea game on point throughout the day. 

Early Morning 

Matcha Tea - What better way to kick-start your day than with antioxidant-rich matcha tea? This highly potent beverage is derived from the powdered leaves of a specially grown green tea, and it has earned a reputation for being a nutritional powerhouse. Just to give you an idea of how nutrient-rich this tea is, keep in mind that one serving of matcha tea provides over 120 times more antioxidants than regular green tea! 

White Tea - White tea is basically the Swiss Army knife of the tea world, offering a myriad of health benefits that include fortifying the body against cancer and cardiovascular disease. This is primarily due to the fact that white tea contains high levels of catechins, which are powerful plant chemicals that have been shown to neutralize free radicals in the body. 

Mid-Morning 

Green Tea - Although green tea is great for practically any time of the day, it can particularly come in handy right before lunchtime due to its ability to rev up your metabolism. Not only can green tea give your body a calorie-burning edge going into your mid-day meal, but it's also loaded with an organic compound known as EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), which has been shown to decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease. 

Lunch 

Black Tea - Those of us who are familiar with the infamous "post-lunch lethargy" will be glad to know that black tea can help remedy the onslaught of afternoon sleepiness. The high caffeine content of black tea (roughly 40 milligrams per cup) can give you a nice energy boost after a heavy lunch, and as an added bonus, research shows that black tea can reduce "bad" (LDL) cholesterol by over 7 percent. Another benefit of choosing black tea at lunchtime is that it's one of the most prevalent types of tea offered in restaurants, so it's an easy find when you're out at lunch. 

Late Afternoon 

Pu-erh Tea - This is an excellent choice for an afternoon refresher, as it has been shown to aid in digestion due to the special fermentation process it undergoes when the leaves are dried. In addition, pu-erh tea has traditionally been used in China to help stave off weight gain after indulgent meals. 

Evening 

Oolong Tea - Oolong tea is a popular choice to cap off the evening, as it contains niacin, a key nutrient that helps to detoxify the body. This definitely comes in handy when you've had a heavy dinner that wasn't exactly nutritionally sound. Oolong's detoxifying properties are just one example of the many remarkable health benefits that this classic beverage offers – oolong tea also helps reduce the risk of heart disease, lowers cancer risk, prevents bone loss, supports brain health, and fortifies the immune system via its high antioxidant content. 

Chamomile Tea - This soothing tea is an excellent stress reliever after a hectic day, as it has long been lauded for its ability to relax the body and induce restful sleep. Chamomile tea is also a very capable immune system booster, as it contains powerful phenolic compounds that can ward off bacterial infections in the body.
