Just as soon as the weather cools down enough to enjoy being outside, the schedules ramp up. With school and work and extracurriculars, it can seem like you're barely getting any time together as a family, let alone time to enjoy the nice fall weather.
It can be tempting to make family time a sedentary event - while meals, movies and games are all great ideas for getting the family together, why not try something active? With all the sitting both you and your children do throughout the day, a little evening or weekend activity can help bring you together and help everyone stay healthy.
Here are some ideas to keep you and your children active and having fun without the use of television or electronics for entertainment.
As a family, choose an activity to try for the whole month, even if it’s only once a week. Then every month choose a new activity. Try new activities to push yourselves physically and mentally. Some activities you could try are bike riding, tennis, or playing catch or soccer in the yard. Activities like this will create a stronger family bond, encourage more family time and teach children healthy life habits. If it’s raining, you can try indoor activities like balloon volleyball or a scavenger hunt. They are easy, fun and take little time to prepare. You can also come into the club and swim or play tennis indoors or racquetball depending on your children's ages.
You can make these activities more fun by creating friendly family competitions like who can throw or kick the farthest or who can ride or swim the longest distance without stopping. Keep score on a sheet on the fridge and reward the winner with a gold star next to their name for that activity - and maybe even throw in extra portion of dessert!
Children take their cues from their parents, including how to be active. Family activities will encourage your children to develop discipline, team work skills and healthy habits that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
